Local government chairmen flee as peace talk turns bloody

Local government officials, in a move to restore peace to their troubled area through conflict resolution, were forced to take to their heels as disagreement between rival youths degenerated to a gun battle.

According to a report by Tiv Taraba, the crisis which started in April claimed the lives of an octogenarian and several others, who were shot, butchered or burnt.

Tiv Taraba wrote;

The crisis started on 1st April, 2019 in tse-Atsenga kente, wukari LGA of taraba state when jukun youth in the community stop the,tiv from getting water from the stream that serve as a source of water in the community. The issue was resolved by the leaders of the two communities and both parties left only for the jukun youth in Kente to reorganize and come back around 11:00pm of that same day and starts burning down tiv houses.

An old woman of about 80yrs old Mrs. Mongunyi Shingir Ande was Burnt in her house during the attack. Three other persons lost their lives in the attack. That same day tiv people were attacked and killed in wukar town and their motorcycles were taken away.

On the 2nd April, 2019, the Ukum LG boss and his counterpart in wukari Daniel Adi Grace scheduled to meet in Kente to resolved the matter but it was not possible, because the wukari local gov’t. Boss was accompanied by jukun youth who refuse to listen to every one including their boss, their sporadic shooting sent every body away from the area and the Ukum local gov’t. Boss has to run for his life too as the conflict resolution was brought to an abrupt end.
